In Chapter Fifteen, Herzog and the Sherpas make their way down the mountain. The Sherpas are extremely important because Herzon fingers are frozen, and his hands a basically useless. As they make their way down, Herzog is swept over by an avalanche, which sends him and the Sherpas tumbling down the mountain. Herzog is left suspended by his rope upside down on the slope. Luckily, his rope is stuck on a ridge of ice..... the two Sherpas on the other end, balancing them. All three men are bruised and frightened, and when they come to the wall where they'll have to descend. Herzog holds onto his climbing rope the best he can, and then belays it to the Sherpas so they can follow. The rope rips the flesh from Herzog's frozen fingers, but losing his fingers comes second to bringing everyone back safely.
