Marriage is an arrangement in this novel and not something that comes out of love. The main character is considered a 'spinster' by her family because she has not secured a husband, and so she cares for her aging parents (who are very disappointed in her). Marriage becomes a rallying point for the protagonist as it represents all things horrible and oppressing to the main character as she struggles against sexism and a culture that does not value the education of its female citizens.
