In comparison to Uma, Aruna is more cheerful, intelligent, sensitive, and generally is more social. She sees marriage as a way to excape her childhood home. However, her impatiences makes her seem insenseitive to Uma, who is not marriageable material as far as everyone thinks. Later, when she uses marriage to free herself, she and her husband move to Bombay where she engages in living a very shallow life.
