Good vs evil is both literal and metaphorical in the book. The major theme in "Angel Fire East" is the battle between good versus evil as portrayed by the continuous struggle between the Word and the Void. Since all magic can be good or evil depending on the inclination of the being wielding the magic, the servants of the Word battle the servants of the Void to control the gypsy morph since the magic of the gypsy morph can be used to tip the scales in the continuous battle between these forces of good and evil.
