The story is written from several perspectives. As a rule, an entire chapter is presented from a single perspective. The majority of the chapters are presented from the point of view of the character referred to in this guide as “The Narrator.” He is a child but is never named. This may be an effort by the author to make the reader understand the story is typical of people of this time and lifestyle. The author may also have been relating information from a personal perspective though the story is presented as a novel rather than a biography.
