The mud has created such a strong suction around Azucena that she cannot be pulled free. Some kind of debris is holding her legs, and while others suggest that it must be the rubble from her crushed house, she insists that it is the bodies of her dead brothers and sisters. Carlé believes that a pump might be used to save her, but there isn't one available. By the time one does become available, Azucena dies. She had no strength left to struggle, and she gave in to the inevitability of death.
