Ndondo is Jezile's second child. Ndondo is conceived the night before her mother is sent to prison for six months. Jezile hides her pregnancy for a time after her return to her home village out of a sense that she has failed her family in some way. Eventually, however, Jezile tells her family and they look forward to Ndondo's birth with fear and dread because of the lack of food. When Ndondo is born, it is alone in her home because Jezile knows her husband has been arrested and she is ashamed, afraid to call for help. Ndondo is still an infant when her father goes to jail and Jezile is forced to go far away to work in the home of a white family. When Jezile returns, she has a third child.
