In the novel and then there were none. Why does the author describe characters becoming more beast-like or bestial as the novel progresses?

The author wishes to show how civilized humans deteriorate into "beasts" once all of the trappings of civilization are stripped away.  This can be seen in the dinner they are served at the beginning and slowly degrades into the characters eating nothing as the outlook becomes more bleak.
