Lizzie and her brother Karli, who was eight years younger than her, lived with their mother and father, whom they called Mutti and Papi, in a village in Germany in the 1930s. Karli was born with one leg shorter than the other and had asthma, so he was physically weak, but loved attention and was very outgoing. Mutti worked at a zoo and cared for the elephants, one of which she named Marlene after a famous singer at the time, Marlene Deitrich.

The elderly Lizzie becae confused and started the story again. She was born in 1929 in Dresden, Germany. Her father worked in an art gallery restoring paintings. The family enjoyed living in the beautiful city, and often took ‘musical picnics’ together, where they would eat and listen to songs from a gramophone in the park. They also visited their mother’s sister Aunt Lotti and her husband Uncle Manfred in the countryside every summer.

When Lizzie was growing up, there was public discussion about war, but Lizzie’s only memory of this was when the other boys mocked Karli, calling him “Pegleg” when he tried to join a war parade. Lizzie also witnessed incidents of violence against Jewish people, and saw the yellow stars they had to sew onto their clothing, although Papa forbid her from speaking about these events at home because he wanted to preserve peace there.

One night, in the summer of 1938, Lizzie heard Mutti arguing with Uncle Manfred and Aunt Lotti, who supported Hitler and believed he would rebuild German power, while Mutti said that he was a madman who would lead them into war. The next morning, Mutti and Papa took the children away from Uncle Manfred and Aunt Lotti’s house and said they would never be talking to these relatives again. However, Lizzi was not aware of Hitler’s actions and was continuing her adolescence normally, until a year later, when Papi was sent to France as a soldier.
