Why does the astrologer first offer to give the man back his money and then press him for more money? Why is the astrologers later statement that Guru Nayak cheated him ironic that is how is it different from what we expected

The man challeges the astrologer, and he is the one who actually begins the betting. As a result, the two men go back and forth upping the ante. The astrologer tries to back out because he feels uncomfortable.

The astrologer felt very uncomfortable. " Here, take your anna back. I am not used to such challenges. It is late for me today. . . ." He made preparations to bundle up.
