The main conflict in the novel, An Artist of the Floating World, revolves around the tension between Suichi and Kuroda and the younger generation. There is an expectation by the younger generation that the parties guilty of bringing Japan into World War II were also guilty of betraying their younger compatriots, and sending them off to disaster and death.
