The story is presented from the third-person omniscient point of view. This means the reader is able to see every aspect of the character's intentions and thoughts as they develop. Dreiser uses standard prose with occasional variances based on speech patterns and character traits. He likes to employ variances on descriptions, using situations unique to his characters’ names or surroundings to create original words and phrases such as the Hortense inspired word “Hortensian” or using the honorific “Mr.” to create the verb “mistering” as a way of describing the action of calling someone mister. He also uses cliché and common imagery as a way of showing the ways in which some characters tend to think, speak, or act alike.
