The two primary conflicts can be found in Fabiola's struggle to fit in and acclimate to the differences between the culture in which she was raised and her new home in Detroit, Michigan. Fabiola also has a difficult time processing and accepting what she sees as a distinct lack of morality and values. Having been brought up in an extremely strict environment, Fabiola is appalled by her cousins' distinct lack of courtesy, manners, and respect, as well as their use of coarse language.
