Who is Odin from American Gods and what is their importance?

Odin is a Norse god, who is worshiped by the Vikings. Over the course of the novel, Mr. Wednesday is revealed to be an American incarnation of this god. When the war is over, Shadow visits Odin in his homeland and gives him Wednesday's glass eye.
