The bookstore is the place where Luca first learns to speak as he is enraptured by a book and wants her to read the book a gain. Additionally, Lydia is enchanted by Javier and his knowledge of books. He frequents the store and the two hold their own version of a book club. Javier brings gifts to her following his travels. Although Lydia views the relationship as purely platonic, it is in the book store that Javier falls in love with Lydia. When Javier refers to her as the Queen of his Soul, it is clear that these conversations and meetings have touched his very soul.

In Lydia's own words, "Bookstores are a refuge" (375). They feed the soul.
