The literacy center represents rejected opportunities for knowledge and enforces how immensely Amal’s neighbors fear the Khans. The center presents an opportunity for adult citizens of Amal’s village to gain valuable literacy skills. But no one in Amal’s village makes use of the center because they will not affiliate themselves with a building funded by the Khans. Saeed employs the literacy center as a symbol of the Khans power over Amal’s village. The villagers’ extreme fear of the Khans inspires them to avoid the literacy center, thus depriving them of knowledge.
