The narrative of Always and Forever, Lara Jean is related in first-person present tense. Narrated by Lara Jean, the teenage protagonist, everything in the book is filtered through the lens of her mind. Because of this, the scope of the novel is very narrow, focusing intensely on Lara Jean, her family, and her boyfriend. Lara Jean has a group of friends but hardly any of them get much more consideration than background characters such as her guidance counselor Mrs. Duvall.
