Alfred Higgins is an inept, immature, and self-absorbed, young man. He works for Mr. Carr, and proves himself to be a lazy and untrustworthy employee. Without the help of his mother, as well as Mr. Carr's very understanding temperament, Alfred might have found himself in quite a bit of trouble. Alfred grows and matures over the course of the novel.
