Nic references the Russian dolls that fit into each other. They symbolize human behavior as it is hard to really know someone because they put on a facade, but the real person is always underneath. This is true of Nic as she creates selves to cover her real personality such as the self-made Nic in Philadelphia and the victim Nic in front of Tyler and her family. When one peals away the different faces and reveal the real Nic one finds a manipulator who not only speaks with an accent, but does not speak grammatically correct English. She shows her real self when she says “Must’ve torn her up something good the first time she realized it wouldn’t” (82).
