what does remarque mean when he says "then gradually we become something like men again"?

In chapter six, Paul reflects on how the fighting sucks their souls out of them. On the front, they are merely animals trying to survive: they do not think of food, rest, sex, or laughter. It is only during the moments of calm between the fighting that they become men again.
