Who is Kola from Alicia and what is their importance?

Kola was a Russian soldier, who was caught by the Germans and imprisoned in a train station. He and his fellow soldiers were rescued by Alicia. They them take her to their headquarters, where she is hailed as a hero and given documents that identify her as a student, traveling back to Russia to study medicine. Alicia used these documents several times while moving about Poland.
