New York City is an important location because it is the place Sontag was born, and the city in which she wrote most of her criticism for the majority of her life. Sontag was born there in 1933, and she died there in 2004 at the age of 71. It is also the setting in which she watched the majority of the films and plays that are discussed in the book, as well as the central hub of culture and artistic life during her time of the 1960s.
