Huckleberry Finn has a long history of being controversial. First, it tackles the notion of people of color having the same feelings and intelligence as whites. It shows Jim in a better light than most of the white folks that are depicted. For modern audiences the colloquialisms uses (such as the term 'nigger' ) are often a reason cited for banning this classic of American literature. Some dislike the fact that Huckleberry smokes and drinks, while others go so far as to state that it promotes cross dressing (a bit of a stretch).
