Why are the townspeople on the ferry floating loaves of bread across the water?

The quicksilver in the bread supposedly assists them in finding dead bodies in the river. It seems to work somewhat like a magnet.

Well, then I happened to think how they always put quicksilver in loaves of bread and float them off, because they always go right to the drownded carcass and stop there.
