How are the townspeople superstitious in Huckleberry Finn?

Superstition is a constant thread that winds throughout the novel. Some examples are where there are cannons firing to bring the 'dead' body to the surface of the water. They also put mercury into a loaf of bread that's supposed to locate the dead body.
