the townpeople usaually have no kind of way of gettin entertment but by plays so they would believe any thing

The first group of townspeople who attend the performance realize that they've been ripped off, but because they are too proud to admit that they were 'had' by these con men, they go out and brag to those who did not see the play about how great it was (so they, too, will be ripped off).
