Herne Hill is the location of the house where Katherine was born and grew up. It is located in Britain and not Ireland. Norah treats this fact with great secrecy, since her mother is known as a great Irish actress and it would create confusion if it were known she was not born in Ireland. Herne Hill is most important because it is where Norah returns after being visited by Holly. Norah's return to Herne Hill provides the occasion for much of her recollection of Katherine and her friends and relations.
