Why does Bill insist that John tell his mother that he was not at Pittsburg Landing? (Give an answer deeper than the words at the end of the chapter.)

In context, Bill does not want his mother to think that he and Tom faced each other in direct conflict.... he wanted her to know that he was not among the men who fought at Pittsburgh Landing where Tome was killed.
