What is the theme in Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt?

One major theme in the novel, Across Five Aprils, is that of forgiveness. The Creighton's ability to both persevere and forgive in the face of great tragedy enables them to heal and move on... not to mention the second chances it affords those to whom they've shown empathy.
