The family farm is located in Southern Illinois. Illinois is a free state, but the Creightons, none-the-less, have family farming in slave states.... states that uphold the tradition and own slaves. This in itself causes conflict.... conflict between family members, differences of opinion, and in the end, everyone must make their own decisions.

John, Tom and Eb support the Union. Bill is completely against the war. Jethro protects his cousin, a deserter, but in able to live with his decision, he actually writes a letter to the President for advice.

Lastly, although Illinois isn't home to any great battles, its citizens become the victims of vigilantes.... a war within the community itself, as people take sides.
