The author uses the techniques of metaphors and similes to help explain the situation from Rayona's point of view. When describing the awkwardness in Aunt Ida's house when Rayona arrives, Rayona thinks to herself that "Aunt Ida and I don't know what to do with each other. We are unexpected surprises, spoiled plans, bad luck."
