Old Man Nyquist from A Year Down Yonder is Grandma Dowdel's arch nemisis. They have a long standing dislike of one another, stemming from a swindle that Nyquist pulled on Grandma involving pecans that fell to the ground. He told her she should have all of the pecans that fell, knowing that none would fall. Grandma has never forgotten how he cheated her.
