Why is Jake essentially lost in court the day he returned after being shot at?

Jake is essentially lost in court following the day he was shot because the prosecutor did better homework than his team did. The D.A. knew about Dr. Bass's rape conviction but Jake did not. Jake questioned Dr. Bass and had him come out as a professional and an expert witness. Buckley was able to discredit him with only a little probing.
