In Chapter 50, Hamza gives Laila a box with a letter from Jalil to Miriam, and also with money Jalil had left for Miriam, which reads, "I hope you do not think that I am trying to buy your forgiveness...I am merely giving you, if belatedly, what was rightfully yours all along." (p. 406).
Jalil's offering is too late, as Miriam is already dead.... executed for murdering her abusive husband.
