Dr. Manette refuses to compromise his integrity by taking the Evermonde's money to stay quiet about the atrocities that they'd committed. Because of this, the Evermondes conspire to have him imprisoned so that he has no opportunity to give evidence against them. He spends many long years in the bastille.
