A main theme of the novel is the theme of ownership. This theme is most exemplified with the artifacts that are held in the Wales National Museum. When the Morgan family arrives for their tour of the museum, Dr. Owen tells them the story of an old farmer who had found an eighth-century chalice and had been using it to hold apples on his counter-top.
