The novel's main conflict can be found in Dick Courtney's desire to dam Chaka's Gate, and in turn, flood the Bubezi River in order to farm. Opposed by his father, who knows the plan is born in greed, Sean Courtney has the area ratified as a national park. As a result, Dick Courtney threatens to kill his father, all while his father stands his ground and forms the National Wildlife Society in Africa.
