The language of A Spark of Light is informal and easily understood. The author largely avoids the use of terms that readers may be unfamiliar with in describing medical procedures, with few exceptions. The word choice does not change between the characters, giving them a homogenous feel. The purpose of this may be to draw a commonality between the individuals, showing that people are essentially the same regardless of their backgrounds. It also serves to avoid stereotyping people on either side of the abortion issue as being ignorant.
