Why do Hank, Lou, and Jacob enter Anders Nature Preserve in Chapter One?

Jacob is driving. When they crash into a snow bank, Mary Beth rushes off in pursuit of a fox that crossed the road directly in front of them into Anders Nature Preserve. Jacob puts a single bullet into his rifle, and the three men go looking for the fox. They top the rim of a shallow dip and find a plane there.
