Mary was Annie's sister. Though Annie remembered her sister crying as a child because she missed their father, it was Mary who now helped to take care of Annie. The doctors discussed Annie's prognosis and her treatment with Mary, and she was admittedly overwhelmed by making decisions about her sister's health. Generally, Annie realized when the doctor was speaking with Mary about serious matters and she would make her own wishes for her treatment known. When Dr. Connelly suggested sending Annie to the State Hospital for example, Annie simply told them "no."
