Finny is one of those naturally talented individuals that doesn't have to try hard to succeed in anything. Everyone likes him and he has a love of life that draws others to him. Gene is quieter and studious. He has to work hard to succeed but he also has a measure of success. Gene envys Finny's socialability and easy grace and eventually it turns into full blown jealousy.
