In A Separate Peace Chapter 8, why do sports seem less important in wartime?

In this chapter the boys are getting ready to graduate soon and the very real possibility of their having to go to war looms over them like the black clouds that seem to gather at the time. The 'life and death' drama surrounding the sports games seem to pale in comparison to the very real life and death that is going on at the time.
