I believe that the author is offering a view of the 'devil within' and the 'angel within' theory. Everyone has a best and higher self, and the lesser, animalistic, base self. These are represented by the characters of Finny (Phineas) and Gene.  We see the evolution and development of this through the catalyst of Finny's accident and how each boy views the accident, and each other.
