In A Separate Peace Chapter 12, why does Gene say that as he wanders through the night he does not exist?

Gene feels lost, like a ghost; without an identity, a goal, or any sense of himself. He has spent so much of his life defining who he was by his relation to Finny, that with him gone, Gene doesn't feel as though he even exists. This is what he means in this section.
