As the narrative begins, the reader learns that the narrator has decided to renounce the modern world. Deciding not to pursue promotion within the bureaucracy for which he works, the narrator chooses instead to become the caretaker of a government rest house. The narrator has not yet discovered the joy and passion that love brings which foreshadows future conflict in his life.
