Describe symbolism in A Preface to Morals by Walter Lippmann

Lippman does not use symbolism, per se. He does however note that the "loss of certainty" regarding religion has changed the way the Bible is understood. Whereas it was once understood by most as literal (yet also symbolic), it has come to be interpreted as literary analogy.
