The chapter titled, Alice, foreshadows the conclusion of the book in a short speech by the old lady. She notes that everyone on the planet fights continually for "a bone," meaning a pittance of iron, but they have no real hope as it's just a token thing. There is no point to the competition and bloodshed for what can never happen. Just after this speech, she is shot through the throat by an arrow, solidifying the strength of her argument.
