Greed shows up literally and metaphorically: basically the greed of the upper class Jamissons. The greed makes them cold and calculating. The coal miners are forced to work in very dangerous life-threatening conditions because Jamisson won't spend the money for ventilation shafts. Greed has also twisted the entire Jamisson family. Robert, the eldest son by Sir George's first wife Olive, stands to inherit the entire Jamisson fortune and title under British law.
