One student threatens to expose Bird's behavior to the principal of the school. He is then challenged by another student, who later in the narrative offers Bird his moral and practical support. Both students play defining roles in Bird's journey. The first shows him, in no uncertain terms, how inappropriate his behavior and attitude are and indirectly triggers the circumstances that lead to Bird's freedom to transform. The latter offers him both support and an actual way into transformation.
