Mary Russell is more self-assured, she has finished her education, and she is about to turn twenty-one. She has become very interested in the suffrage movement, and she gained her independence when she received her inheritance and was able to take over the family home. Over the course of the novel, Mary also comes to realize that she has fallen in love with Sherlock Holmes.
